The Remodel Plan for the House

I figured this is a good time to give a general overview of our remodel plans for the house, and the order in which we will be working on different steps of the process.

The long wall that separates the living room from the kitchen will be coming down. We’re putting wide beams and a column in the middle, since it is a load bearing wall.

We’re moving the kitchen forward, and the master bathroom will be where the kitchen is currently.  The stairs will eventually be moving over to where the bathroom is at the moment.

I know, that is probably all very confusing. So, here is a snapshot of what the floor plan will look like once we’ve finished moving everything around.

My husband has an architectural program that we’ve been using to plan everything out.

Once we move the stairs, the remodel upstairs comes into the plan, because the stairs will also be moving where the upstairs bathroom is now. This part of the plan will be really difficult to explain, especially because we’re still working out all the details.

The middle dormer will be open to the stair/entry area, and there will be a bit more of a landing on the second level. We will be pushing most of the walls in the rooms and in the hallway out as far as we can. There is plenty of attic space up above the rooms, so the attic space along the back of the rooms and the hallway can be turned into usable floor space. Those little cubby areas on either side of the dormers in the upstairs rooms will be opened up to the rooms. Once we do that, there won’t be tunnels to the dormers in the upstairs rooms. It will also result in more floor space and more sunlight in the rooms.

The bathroom will be in one of the back corners. We will utilize attic space and a small portion of one of the rooms.

Sorry, I don’t have an image of the floor plan for the upstairs yet.

For now, the basement will remain a workspace for my husband. Whenever we get ready to move—quite a few years in the future—we’ll finish the basement for resale.

We would like to eventually add a sun room just off the basement, in the back of the house. We also plan to extend the deck across the backside of the house.

All these plans should become more clear as we begin different parts of the process.

I am honored that you would want to follow the process. 🙂 My sewing room will be in one of the upstairs bedrooms. I am working on getting my sewing area up and running, as soon as I finish getting our master bedroom livable.

Thanks! We’re so excited about the process and we enjoy the hard work. Though, I must admit, we can’t wait to finish it all so that we can enjoy it. 🙂
