Happy Independence Day

IMG_5179Hello, friends! It has been quite a long while since I have been active on this poor neglected blog, but I have still been sewing (as if that is a surprise). I finally photographed a bunch of makes to share with you over the next couple of weeks.

I won’t bore you with details of my absence, other than to say that I was low on time and energy due to my job and some health struggles. The good new is, I have been taking steps to improve my health and my body is steadily healing. I am feeling more motivated than ever to share and interact with the lovely online sewing community. I have missed blogging and keeping up with everyone, and I have some exciting things on the horizon.

Anyway, since it’s Independence Day here in the US, it’s the perfect day to share an outfit with red, white and blue in it.

White Lace Shirt & Orange Corduroy Skirt

IMG_9717Many months after the first teaser, I finally have some pictures and a post to share with you about my white lace shirt.

I often wear this shirt with my orange corduroy skirt that I finished around the same time, so I decided to make this post a doubleheader. Continue reading

Dotty Flared Wrap Skirt

IMG_8667Boy do I have some outfit posts to catch up on. We’ll start with this fun knit wrap skirt.

Yep, I made a wrap skirt…with huge dots on it…and I LOVE it! I’m sure some of you will think both me and the skirt are dotty, and you’d be right! I’m a crazier person than some people believe. I just do a good job of hiding it most of the time.

Now that I’m looking at these pictures it almost looks like something Mrs. Frizzle would wear. Haha! Frankly, that realization changes nothing; if anything, it adds more appeal to the skirt. 😉 Side Question: What type of Magic School Bus adventure/occasion would Mrs. Frizzle wear giant polka dots for?

Anyway, some days I like to wear things that are a bit out of my comfort zone, and this certainly fits that description.

I used a knit fabric that I found at a thrift store for less than $1 a while back. There was some serious yardage of this stuff. I’ve barely made a dent in it, and I made a flared wrap skirt. Continue reading

Summer of Kelly Skirts

kellyskirtsI don’t often make the same pattern multiple times, but since I love my first Kelly skirt so much, I made a couple more for an easy summer wardrobe. It’s so easy to slip one of these on with a basic tank or tee.

Both skirts were made with fabrics from my stash. The blue one is made from a vintage poly-blend of some sort. The beige one is made from what I think is some form of twill. I purchased it about a year and a half ago from the clearance section at G Street Fabrics. Continue reading

My First Kelly Skirt

IMG_7551Guess what? I finished a new skirt last week, and I can tell she and I are going to become good friends over the next few months.

I wore this skirt last week, as you saw in my MMM post on Sunday. I finally got around to taking some pictures of it.

When I came across the floral denim, I knew immediately what I wanted to make with it. As soon as I got home, I ordered Megan Nielsen’s Kelly skirt pattern. Continue reading

Floral Miette Skirt and Another Renfrew

IMG_7000I’d like to introduce you to my new favorite skirt. She’s the perfect little herald of spring.

I don’t think I’ve ever owned a wrap skirt, and I never thought I needed one. Now I don’t know how I lived without one! I’m not sure why, but I’ve always thought an a-line wrap skirt wouldn’t work on me. Please, tell me if I’m wrong, but I think it’s actually pretty flattering.

The skirt is made from a $1 vintage cotton sheet. I fell in love with the print from afar in the thrift store linen section, and I was ecstatic when I pulled it out to see that the material was in perfect condition: no stains, no smells, and probably very minimal use. When I bought it, I had no idea what I’d use it for, but when I decided to buy Tilly’s Miette pattern, this material begged to be made into a wrap skirt. Continue reading

Striped Button-Up Skirt Reconstruction

IMG_6764When I found this dress at the thrift store last month, my mind was immediately flooded with ideas.

I liked a lot of things about the dress: the colors, the stripes, the buttons, the pockets, the shape of the skirt. However, I don’t usually do maxi length dresses or skirts. They tend to make me look extra short. As I was going through my wardrobe in preparation for Me-Made-May, I discovered that I really need more separates. I especially don’t have very many skirts. So, I decided to make a skirt. Continue reading

Self-Drafted Sweater Shirt and Skirt

When I was in California, I didn’t have any of my pattern drafting tools with me but I decided to try to draft a few patterns anyway.

When I found the sweater material above in my $2 bag from Loft, I wanted to make a shirt to go with the skirt I bought while at the thrift store with my sister. . . . Continue reading

Hint of Spring Skirt

The end of last week and this weekend was spent house hunting (Hence, the shortage of posts). The hunt has yielded results. More details later. Today’s project started as the dress below. I found this dress a while ago, started … Continue reading

Epiphany Skirt

This morning’s project commenced with what looked like an extremely tall man’s dress shirt. Perhaps, the tallest man in the Guinness Book of World Records had a similar shirt in his wardrobe. Well, probably not, since he lived from 1918-1940, … Continue reading
