Reinvigorated Kitchen Chalkboard Decor

IMG_5389So, by now you have figured out that shades of turquoise and aqua are like a drug to me.

Yes, I definitely have a problem. And yes, when observing my color addiction, people have been known to reference Marie’s purple everywhere in Breaking Bad.

Here is a terrible photo of my wacky kitchen. As you can see, I have little blue accents everywhere. ;P Whatever… The color makes me happy, so why fight it?

Also, gotta love those wacky ’70s scallop cabinets in combination with that ugly tile, right? Ha! Just so much going on in there. It’s also extremely dark in the kitchen, because it’s pretty closed off from any natural lighting. Anyway, one day the kitchen will be reinvigorated, but for now I’ll just enjoy its “retro” (although, probably not in a good way, in this case) charm.

Anyway, this chalkboard shelf…decoration…thing in my kitchen was an upcycle from a thrifted item. I think I bought it for about $2.

Pleated Raglan Sleeve Top & Thrifted Plaid Blazer

IMG_9854This post has been sitting as a draft for over two years. So, let me just dust the cobwebs away here…Ahem.

I took these photos in our house here in TN, just before we moved in. So there may be some literal cobwebs in these photos. ๐Ÿ˜‚

So, let’s talk about the shirt. This was made from a self-drafted pattern. As a reference point, I used a ready-to-wear shirt that had been a favorite, well-loved shirt for years.

I knew I wanted a shirt with a darted raglan sleeve, so I drafted a raglan top from my basic shirt pattern and played around with the sleeve until I arrived at the look I was going for. Continue reading

Happy Independence Day

IMG_5179Hello, friends! It has been quite a long while since I have been active on this poor neglected blog, but I have still been sewing (as if that is a surprise). I finally photographed a bunch of makes to share with you over the next couple of weeks.

I wonโ€™t bore you with details of my absence, other than to say that I was low on time and energy due to my job and some health struggles. The good new is, I have been taking steps to improve my health and my body is steadily healing. I am feeling more motivated than ever to share and interact with the lovely online sewing community. I have missed blogging and keeping up with everyone, and I have some exciting things on the horizon.

Anyway, since it’s Independence Day here in the US, it’s the perfect day to share an outfit with red, white and blue in it.

Dotty Flared Wrap Skirt

IMG_8667Boy do I have some outfit posts to catch up on. We’ll start with this fun knit wrap skirt.

Yep, I made a wrap skirt…with huge dots on it…and I LOVE it! I’m sure some of you will think both me and the skirt are dotty, and you’d be right! I’m a crazier person than some people believe. I just do a good job of hiding it most of the time.

Now that I’m looking at these pictures it almost looks like something Mrs. Frizzle would wear. Haha! Frankly, that realization changes nothing; if anything, it adds more appeal to the skirt. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Side Question: What type of Magic School Bus adventure/occasion would Mrs. Frizzle wear giant polka dots for?

Anyway, some days I like to wear things that are a bit out of my comfort zone, and this certainly fits that description.

I used a knit fabric that I found at a thrift store for less than $1 a while back. There was some serious yardage of this stuff. I’ve barely made a dent in it, and I made a flared wrap skirt. Continue reading

Hummingbird Skirt & Refashioned Pink Plaid Shirt

IMG_8218I finished this denim Hummingbird skirt several weeks ago, and I’ve worn it and washed it a few times since then. I was really unsure how I’d like it, but it has grown on me…

For Cake patterns, you cut the size closest to your own measurements. It’s recommended that you cut the next size up if you’re between sizes, and adjust the fit during the sewing process. So, I cut the 28″ waist and 40″ hip. The finished hip measurement was perfect, but because my waist measurement is currently 26.5″, I made several adjustments to the skirt once I had it together.

I refashioned the pink plaid shirt back in May. You may recall it from the last day of MMM.

It started out as a shapeless button-down shirt. The shirt sat for about two years waiting to be reconstructed. In May, I finally decided to do something with it.

Vacation & the Fourth of July

IMG_20130628_074124We (Alex and I and my in-laws) just returned this weekend from a trip to Spirit Lake, IA to visit some friends. They live on East Okoboji Lake, so we had the privilege of waking up to this view every morning.

We all had a wonderful time and they were terrific hosts. We even got to go out on a boat a couple of times.

You’d think I would’ve had plenty of extra time to do a few posts here and there, but I really had no interest. Let’s be real, here…Can you blame me?

I think I only went on the internet once or twice the whole trip. It was nice to unplug for a while. I worked a bit on my computer, but nothing that required internet access. I did a lot of looking out at the lake and thinking or reading. I even had the opportunity to do a little sewing. ๐Ÿ˜€ Our hostess was sweet enough to let me use her sewing machine while we were there. Sewing while listening to the water lap onto the shore was a restorative experience.

Reconstructed plaid dress

IMG_7629Some of you may remember this dress from the second-to-last day of Me-Made-May. This is actually the first plaid dress that I can remember owning. Terrible, I know. I’ve had it in my to-be-reconstructed pile for a couple of years now, but I finally got around to reconstructing it. Continue reading

Me-Made-May ’13 Week 5

IMG_20130530_175104I know we’re a couple days into June now, but here’s the final weekly wrap-up for Me-Made-May. I succeeded in taking my daily photos, but I definitely crashed and burned on the looking nice everyday front…

I’m glad that I participated this year, but I am ecstatic to be done taking pictures of myself everyday.

So, how did I do? Well, this was my pledge for the month:

I, Becca, of Creative Notions, sign up as a participant of Me-Made-May โ€™13. I endeavor to wear a different handmade garment every day for the duration of May 2013. I also pledge to sew at least two new garments and two activewear garments.

I wore a handmade garment everyday, without any outfit repeats. Everything I wore was me-made, aside from cardigans and jeans. I did wear my jeans a couple of days, which made me realize that I really need to experiment with making a pair myself. I realized that most of my spring and summer wardrobe is made by me. However, if I tried this challenge in fall or winter, I would have mostly repeats.

I more than met my sewing goal, too. I made 8 new items, several of which have not been posted yet. MMM gave me the boost I needed to be productive.

Me-Made-May ’13 Week 4

IMG_20130520_161158Are we there yet?! I’m so ready to be done taking pictures of myself everyday. It’s becoming a bit of an annoyance. We’re almost there though. Only a few days left in May. Good thing too, I’ve worn just about every single me-made I have.

Just to give you a new face to look at, here’s sweet little Newton. He says, “Hi, everyone!” Oh yeah, and as you can see in the last photos, I just received my new glasses. Now, I have a pair to wear with blues, greens, and blacks and a pair to wear with all the other colors. I’ve never had two pairs of glasses at once. I’ve usually either lost or broken my old ones by now. ๐Ÿ˜›

Me-Made-May ’13 Week 3

IMG_7204If only I’d had time to come up with a clever title for these summary posts. Oh well. It’s round-up time again. Here’s what I wore for week three of Me-Made-May ’13.

That’s all for week 3. I’ve been sewing like mad over the weekend, to the exclusion of everything else. We’re taking a trip for Memorial Day weekend, so I’m trying to make sure that I have what I need to keep my me-made pledge alive. What have you been up to this weekend? Any Memorial Day weekend plans? Continue reading
