A Summery Dress & Some Spiky Thistle

IMG_7446When I saw this thistle on the side of the road, I thought it would make the perfect backdrop for a couple pictures. Unfortunately, a couple of pictures is all I got in because there was a sudden influx of passersby.

I tried to take one of those giant thistle flowers home with me, but there were spikes on everything, including the leaves. Yikes! I don’t think I’d ever been close enough to thistle to realize how “thistle-y” it is. Ha! My penchant for doting on weeds is becoming well-documented. I’m once again guilty of being a weed-lover, because I think thistle is really cool looking. If I could’ve taken one of the stalks home with me without getting bloody, I would’ve.

Anyway, let’s talk about the new dress…I have made this design several times over the past three years, or so (the ones below are some of the custom orders I did through my Etsy shop). It usually popped up in the form of a top, with a cowl or a split cowl. Continue reading

Me-Made-May ’13 Week 4

IMG_20130520_161158Are we there yet?! I’m so ready to be done taking pictures of myself everyday. It’s becoming a bit of an annoyance. We’re almost there though. Only a few days left in May. Good thing too, I’ve worn just about every single me-made I have.

Just to give you a new face to look at, here’s sweet little Newton. He says, “Hi, everyone!” Oh yeah, and as you can see in the last photos, I just received my new glasses. Now, I have a pair to wear with blues, greens, and blacks and a pair to wear with all the other colors. I’ve never had two pairs of glasses at once. I’ve usually either lost or broken my old ones by now. 😛

In Progress – Great Gatsby Challenge Dress

IMG_20130514_125120_260Last month I mentioned that I wanted to make something inspired by my great-grandmother Coles for the Great Gatsby ’20s sewing challenge.

I meant to post my plan a couple weeks ago, but I was busy sewing up a storm. Boy, am I glad that I have until the end of this month for this challenge. I’m almost finished sewing the dress, but I plan to add beading, too. :O Continue reading

Me-Made-May ’13 Week 3

IMG_7204If only I’d had time to come up with a clever title for these summary posts. Oh well. It’s round-up time again. Here’s what I wore for week three of Me-Made-May ’13.

That’s all for week 3. I’ve been sewing like mad over the weekend, to the exclusion of everything else. We’re taking a trip for Memorial Day weekend, so I’m trying to make sure that I have what I need to keep my me-made pledge alive. What have you been up to this weekend? Any Memorial Day weekend plans? Continue reading

Black & White Peter Pan Collar Dress

IMG_7159I have yet another finished project from my unfinished object pile to share with you. I’m sure you’re getting tired of hearing that, but you know it’s only because you’re jealous of my discipline. 😉 Anyway, this is the dress that I referred to a few days ago in the post about my tie neck dress.

I started this dress during my trip to California at the end of last summer. While there, I went to the thrift store with my sister and found this argyle dress. I brought it home, not knowing what I’d do with it. I really thought the argyle part of the dress was ugly, but I liked the bottom half. So, I ended up cutting the skirt off and using it to make a new dress. Continue reading

Me-Made-May ’13 Week 2

IMG_7073It’s time to summarize the second week of Me-Made-May. It was rainy almost every day this week. Boo! I still managed to take some pictures every day.

I’m going to start giving the details (when I can)–in case anyone’s interested–of every aspect of my outfit. Anyway, here ‘s a look at the last week! Continue reading

Lacy Tie-Neck Dress

IMG_7153Yet another project from the Unfinished Object Pile completed. I love checking things off that list!

If you follow me on Instagram, then you caught a glimpse of this dress the other day. I’ve been posting my me-made outfits each day, and I wore this dress last Sunday.

I actually finished this dress several weeks ago. It has been in and out of my UFO pile since last year.

I made the pattern for the bodice of this dress when I was in California last summer. The pattern was actually used for another dress first (I’ll post about that in a couple days). I found the lacy knit fabric at Michael Levine Loft during the same visit to California, but I didn’t cut the material out for this dress until November of last year. Continue reading

Floral Miette Skirt and Another Renfrew

IMG_7000I’d like to introduce you to my new favorite skirt. She’s the perfect little herald of spring.

I don’t think I’ve ever owned a wrap skirt, and I never thought I needed one. Now I don’t know how I lived without one! I’m not sure why, but I’ve always thought an a-line wrap skirt wouldn’t work on me. Please, tell me if I’m wrong, but I think it’s actually pretty flattering.

The skirt is made from a $1 vintage cotton sheet. I fell in love with the print from afar in the thrift store linen section, and I was ecstatic when I pulled it out to see that the material was in perfect condition: no stains, no smells, and probably very minimal use. When I bought it, I had no idea what I’d use it for, but when I decided to buy Tilly’s Miette pattern, this material begged to be made into a wrap skirt. Continue reading

Me-Made-May ’13 Week 1

IMG_6955Here’s a summary for my first week of Me-Made-May. I’ll be posting a round-up each Sunday.

After the first few days of Me-Made-May, I can tell that this month is going to be a lot of fun. I feel so much better about myself when I put the effort in to look presentable, and wearing me-made items gives me a boost of confidence throughout the day. Taking pictures of myself every day is definitely going to get old, but hopefully, I can change it up and make it fun. Continue reading
